Mike H. motions to approve meeting minutes from March 1st. Chris seconds – Motion carries.
Treasurer’s report: Mace H. motions to accept as is- Paul C. seconds. Motion carries.
Newsletter Website: Paul renewed Website licenses. We will post info for the northwest section library which is located at Hennepin Technical College- Brooklyn Park. Chris H. is our librarian. The golf outing has also been put on the Website.
Calendar of Events for 2010
Past Event Follow Up: March 11th -Technical Seminar – Understanding Welding Symbols & Recognizing Weld Joint Discontinuities. We discussed the need to advertise the benefits of PDHs from our seminars.
April 10th- Skills USA- we will have an advisor meeting on Friday the 10th 2:00-4:00. Mace and Kevin are helping. Mace needs judges names to order food.
May 22nd- Family Day at the Minnesota Zoo. Dan J. and Bob R. to form a sub-committee to explore options.
June 12th- District Conference in Saskatoon. Jay G. and Todd B. will attend. Bob R. motions to allocate $300 to cover their expenses. Chris seconds. Motion carries. Mace reports Tim Schwanz and Dave Lynnes are interested in becoming District Director. Bob S. will pick scholarship awardees.
June 14th- Golf Outing at Sundance in Dayton. The flier is out. Subcommittee meeting on Wednesday April 7th at Oak City in Brooklyn Center, time: 4:30.
July 28th- Industrial open house at St. Paul College. Paul C. will look into incorporating the flier (PDF) plus a link and banner into our Website. A fee of $50 will be assessed for the link and the northwest section will have a table there.
Other Business
The Executive Board voted on Officers with results as follows. Chair- Jay Gerdin, 1st Vice Chair-Chris Henziak, 2nd Vice Chair- Bob Renner, 3rd Vice Chair- Ric Eckstein, Treasurer- Mike Hanson, Secretary-Korey Parchem. Officers will begin their new positions in June.
Mace reports interest in a D1.5 Seminar and an offer of a moderator possibly in August.
CWI Exam in September.
Next meeting, May 3rd at 5:00- Jake’s City Grill in Eden Prarie.

February meeting minutes approved after a brief review.
Treasurers Report: Todd mentions that we should congratulate Mike on the revised format of the Section Treasury Report/Financial Statement /Event Summary. It is both concise and informative. The entire Board thanks Mike for another job well done!
Mace will confirm final preperations with Gardenview Inn staff for the March 11th Understanding Welding Symbols Seminar.
Jay motions to accept Treasurers Report – Chris seconds. Motion carries.
Steve Endrezzi will turn in forms to National for Scholarship Awards.
Mace points out that many outstate schools were not made aware of the Behind The Mask contest. Discussion followed on making sure all appropriate schools/people are contacted for all events and also enhancing the use of sub-committees to be more thorough with this and any other applicable duties.
On the upside – most felt the contest was well run. The raffle and speed cutting contest were highlights.
Small complaints – a late start, and poor signage to find the Welding Department .
Calendar of Events for 2010
March 11: Weld Symbols and Joint Discontinuities Seminar – Mace will have manuals ready by Wed. 3/5/10. Mike purchased 6 copies of AWS A2.4@ $91.00 each.
April 10 : Skills USA at St. Paul Tech. College – Jennifer Polz the Director of Skills USA – Minnesota was in attendance, and was as usual a wealth of knowledge and information. The committee recognizes and greatly appreciates her continued expertise in this outstanding event.
Jay is working on the contest prints with the help of Manufabs - Kevin Haley.
Jay will also enlist his students to assist in machine setup, and material/ consumables support.
May 22 : This date was suggested for a Family Fun Day at the Minnesota Zoo, with a picnic lunch from 11:00 – 1:00 in the pavillion.The zoo would be open before and after lunch for sightseeing.
June 14: Golf Outing at Sundance Golf in Dayton. We will advertise the event on our website with a banner asking for donationsto be used as gifts and/or prizes.
Next meeting – April 5th @ 4:30 at Hennepin Technical College.

Treasures Report: Jay motions to accept – motion carries. Discussion as to whether or not to hold back on scholarships next year to help build up funds. This well be looked at after Golf Outing.
Articles for the Welding Journal are starting to appear. Mace has sent reporting form to all members. Chair of event to send report and pictures to National.
Website: Paul can only post what is sent and approved by Board. Paul will take pictures of Board members for web. All members should send Paul short bio.
Calendar of events for 2010
January - Awards Dinner: Good turnout despite weather. Discussion as to whether or not to move to later month or not have at all. Decision was made to stay with current format.
February - Behind the Mask: Jay has prints and material for 20 for each contest. Jay and Bob Sand will judge. Anoka student chapter to help run contest. Mace motions to pick up dinner for all workers. Motion carries.
March 11th – Understanding Welding Symbols & Recognizing Weld Joint Discontinuities.
Mace will pick up seminar manuals. Total cost to be $180.00 for breakfast, lunch, manual, and seminar. Jay motions – Chris seconds.
In addition, Mace motions to purchase 6 copies of AWS A 2.4 welding symbols and sell them for
$100.00 a copy as a supplement to the Seminar. Jay 2nds – motion carries.
April 10th – Skills USA @ St. Paul Technical College: Chris will contact St. Paul Steel to inquire about materials.

Members present : Meeting called to order at 5:10 with these members present: Mike Hanson, Bob Sands, Mace Harris, John Penaz, Chris Hensiak, Steve Endrezzi, Jay Gerdin, Bob Renner and Paul Carter.
Jay motions to approve November 29 meeting minutes – Chris seconds. Motion carried.
Treasurers report – MIke informs committee he sent a check directly to St. Paul Technical College because the scholarship foundation there is now defunct. He will also invoice Lynnes welding $300.00 for their advertising spot (banner) on the section website which Paul installed as of 12/06/09.
mace will forward the fund balance in the Northwest Section scholarship fund to Mike and he will post quarterly.
Todd will look into the unpaid ($125.00) bill to Excel Energy from an earlier seminar.
Mike motions to reimburse Bob R. ($713.00) for expenses to attend the 2009 FABTECH International and AWS Welding Show in Chicago from Nov. 15 through the 18th – Paul seconds. Motion carries.
Jay motions to approve Treasurer report – Mace seconds. Motion carries.
Newsletter / Website – When addressing articles or forms that may be sent to National you can use the AWS link and/or Paul will set up a link with quicker access.
Paul requests the the Executive Board Members submit a short-concise biography along with a picture to post on the website.
Calendar of Events for 2010
February 11 – Behind The Mask – at MCTC – 2:30 PM. Processes to be featured in the contest are FCAW, GTAW and OFC. There will be a virtual welding and speed cutting contest for a nominal fee of $5.00 cash. Todd will contact Rhenda from AWS to verify insurance provisions for the contest. he is also lining up dinner (6:00) menu options and putting together a flyer. Bob R. will work on material supply from Olympic Steel as Jay supplies him with info/prints.
March 11 – 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Technical Seminar – Revised title to Understanding Welding Symbols & Recognizing Weld Joint Discontinuities. A complete outline of events will be forthcoming from the sub-committee in the near future.
March 27 – Skills USA will be held at St. paul College – Jay is directing this event with technical assistance from Chris and Todd.
April – Weld Procedure Seminar with an emphasis on D1.5 – Bridge Welding Code. Mace will contact Jamie Connor as an speaker.
May – Family Day – Dan is working on and looking for suggestions.
June 14 – Golf Outing will be held at Sundance Golf in Dayton.
Other Business
Mace will visit with selected student chapters to promote the obvious benefits of AWS. He also points out that the meeting minutes might be completed in a more timely manner. Bob R. (secratary) reminds the rest of the board that a new Director will be nominated soon in Saskatoon. The Committee will look into possibly hosting another CWI Exam.

Todd called meeting to order at 5:00 P.M.
Mike motions to approve October 5th meeting minutes – Bob R. seconds. Motion carries.
Treasurers report – Mike reports that St. Paul Tech. and Anoka Tech have not cashed their scholarship checks. A decision was made to track/report scholarship amounts in meeting minutes.
Bob S. motions to approve Treasurer report – Dan seconds. Motion carries.
Newsletter / Website – Paul reports that tours are updated on the website. He will also hi-lite significant events, along with a history section.
Mace will e-mail form for sending articles to National to all board members.
Paul will put banner up for Lynnes Welding Training. Also known as Dave’s Welding & Fab.

November 11 – Olympic Steel Tour
Mace is working on dining facilities and will report next meeting.
Todd motions to present Olympic Steel and Consolidated Precision Products (CPP) each a placque as an expression of gratitude from the Board for the time and commitment in opening they’re doors to us and all who are able to tour they’re facilities. Chris seconds – motion carries.
December 9 – CPP Tour in Minneapolis. Fliers are out – sign up or contact Mike Hanson to secure a spot.
January – AWS Holiday Party - Todd received life member pins for presenting. Mace is working on a distinguished presentor from AWS.
February – Behind The Mask – proposed dates 11th or 16th. No checks will be accepted for the virtual/welding or speed cutting contests, cost to be $5.00 each.
March – Skills USA – Jay Gerdin Directing.
April – Weld Procedure Seminar focusing on NDT.
May – Family Day – Present Dan with your ideas.
June 14 – Golf Outing will be held at Sundance Golf in Dayton. Mace sent a letter to New Prague Golf Course declining for 2010.
Other Business
Mace is working on student chapters. He also points out that in June – District Director is up for election.
A discussion was prompted to have board meetings on alternate nights – possibly Friday. Proposal was voted down as this would not work out for the majority of Board Members.

Meeting was called to order @ 5:00
Minutes from August 31st meeting approved with one amendment – Advantage Marketing will be taken off golf hole sponsorship.
Treasurers Report : Mike Hanson sent Dwight Affeldt (Excel Energy) a bill for $125.00 for the Stainless Steel seminar of 3-9-09.
Mace will forward info for section scholarship funds in the foundation. Discussion followed as to adding a line item on the treasures report.
Bob Sands reports he has received scholarship confirmation letters from Ridgewater (Willmar) and MCTC. Checks sent to all but ATC and HTC. Bob will send notice in the form of a letter to Anoka and Hennepin Tech. Requesting they also provide pertinent info on their scholarship recipients.
Newsletter/ website Update – Mike has had the new section website linked on the AWS national site. Paul can only post info that he receives
The Procedures Seminar on ASME Sec. 9 moderated by Dwight Affeldt on Sept 24 went well with some key points made by Bob Sands. Kudos to both gentlemen.
Upcoming Events
November 15-18 AWS Fab Techech Show in Chicago: Bob Renner will be attending as section Rep. Along with District Director Mace Harris.
New date to be scheduled for the tour of Olympic Steel at upcoming meeting.
December – Consolidated Precision Products tour and mini seminar on aluminum castings plus an overview on applicable metallurgical processes.
Awards Dinner/ Holiday Party on or around Jan 7 most likely held at the Garden Inn – Shoreview. Mace to check on availability with them. AWS would like to actively promote the SENSE program with the possibility of bringing John Mendoza in to speak.
February – Behind The Mask at MCTC – Todd working on finalizing date – either 11th or 18th. MTCT students to help with contest. Jay will supply prints for the test with all applicable info for each process, TIG, OFC, and FCAW.
Bob R. will supply 3’’ steel shaft for the speed – cutting (raffle) contest, he and Chris H. will work with Olympic Steel on supplying all other steel for the welding test.
March – Skills USA at ST. Paul Technical College on 3/20 or 3/27. Jay will take over as coordinator and is lining up a sponsor. Chris, Todd and Bob S. will edit / finalize the testing procedures.
Mace and Bob working on technical seminar. Possible subjects: Aluminum welding or visual inspection
April – Weld Procedure / NDT Seminar. Chris and Todd to plan subject – possibly D.15 and / or NDT.
Other Business
Mace has been busy promoting AWS at outstate schools – even using his vacation time to do so. Just one of the many reasons he is our District Director.
On a much more somber note we send our condolances to Jay Gerdin on the untimely passing of his mother. Todd motions to send flowers. Motion carries. Mike will arrange for flowers to be sent to the funeral.
Next meeting will be Nov. 2nd at PEC.

Meeting was called to order at 4:30
Approved minutes from last meeting with one note – Todd to follow up with Pam on Olympic Steel tour and report at next meeting.
Treasurers Report: Advantage sign and graphics will be taken off golf hole sponsorship.
Mike motions to drop bad check as unresolved- Bob seconds- motion carries. Our balance is $6,169.00 with $100.00 outstanding for member rebate. Bob R. motions to accept treasurers report-Paul seconds- motion carried.
AWS Scholarships for 2009-2010: Discussion with Bob Sands via conference call. Mace motions to set scholarship amount at $500.00 contingent upon it going to a welding student with pertinent info supplied by the school about the student. Bob S. seconds-motion carries. Schools on the list are: New Richmond, and Rice Lake in Wisconsin, Western Dakota Technical Institute and School Of Mines in South Dakota, Technical Colleges in Minnesota include: Anoka, Hennepin, MCTC, St. Cloud, and St. Paul, along with Dunwoody and Ridgewater in Wilmar. Bob Sands will send a letter to all schools informing them of the stipulations. Bob brought up previous discussion about possibly moving the golf outing for next year- he will check out Sundance ( Dayton ) for cost comparison and availability. Korey will do the same with Pebble Creek in Becker and TBC in Blaine.
Mike Hanson will facilitate Paul to take over officially as section webmaster. Chris suggests looking into podcasting future events/seminars to increase our presence at schools – also posibly enlisting the schools media departments to help as a class project.
Calendar of events for 2009 – 2010 season:
August 30 – September 6 CWI Seminar held at the Holiday Inn in Bloomington. Mike motions to pay proctors (Todd) and (Bob S.) $100 each.Dan seconds – motion carries.
September 24 – Procedures Seminar on ASME Sec.9 with Dwight Affeldt at the Hilton Garden Inn – Shoreview. Todd to check on final preporations – limit will be approx. 50 people. Dan will work on a list of contacts to help promote AWS Seminars. Mace reminds everyone that AWS now recognizes Professional Development Hours as well as CEU’s – so make sure you record those hours to earn credits.
October – Tour of Olympic Steel or Tour of MTS. Bob will call Olympic Steel to get contact and work with Kris to set up tour.
November 15 -18 AWS Fabtech Show in Chicago. Dan got bus rates for 30-50 people @ approx. $2,500-$3,500. Mace will contact AWS National for possible reimbursement. Dan and Paul will work on a flyer to gauge interest in attending the show. Jay motions to send Bob R. as Section rep. to Fabtech show – Chris seconds. Motion carries.
December – Consolidated Precision Products tour and mini seminar on aluminum metallurgy and producing castings. Mike will look into tour hours and number of guests that can attend.
January – Awards Dinner - Mike and Mace will set up at the Hilton Garden Inn/ Shoreview This year it will include a holiday party with an AWS national Representative as speaker. We will also continue to invite past chairs.
February – Behind The Mask at MCTC – Todd will work on nailing down a date. He will also check with Pam to see how involved she will be, and get his students to help with the contest. Jay will work on prints- with the processes including TIG, OFC, and FCAW.
Bob R. and Chris will contact Olympic Steel about materials. We will also hold a raffle to involve speed cutting and virtual welding – details to be worked out.
March – Skills USA -tentative dates are 3/20 or 3/27 - 2010 to be held at ST. Paul Technical College. Jay will take over as Coordinator and is already working on a sponsor for the wire feed portion including materials,weld procedures,and inspectors. Chris will work with Bob S. on finalizing/ editing the test.
April – Weld Procedures Seminar – Kris and Todd to plan subject – leaning towards D1.5 and/or Non Destructive Testing.

August 10, 2009

Meeting called to order at 4:40
Minutes: Review of June meeting minutes and last years events.
Opened with discussion of treasurer’s report. Everyone was pleased with how the golf outing turned out-net profit was $2,863.58. Motion by Paul to approve treasurer report carries.
Mace suggests with agreement by group-no decisions on scholarhips without Mike Hanson and Bob Sands approval.
A decision was made to put executive committee members pictures on the web page. Members to provide pictures and pertinent info to Paul via e-mail.
Mace is working on a tour of MTS for October-will nail down by next meeting. He will also follow up with Pam on the Olympic Steel tour.
AWS Fab-Tech Show: Dan will check on bus rates for anyone interested in going on Sun.-Mon. Nov 15-16. Will discuss whether the section should send someone-Jay or possibly Bob Renner at next meeting.
Todd drafted a letter to let potential new advertising companies learn about our updated website links and Facebook page. It was met with resounding approval. He also reminded everyone that executive members receive this advertising for free.
Dan will work on better tracking of AWS event attendance, to minimize cancellations and of course-increase attendance.
Mace working on involving more schools in AWS – possible chapters at Hennepin Tech, Anoka, and Brooklyn Park. AWS members and students also receive discounts at numerous welding suppliers/distributors. Mace will supply Paul with this info to post.
Todd produced invitation letter for Sept 24 Procedures Seminar with Dwight Affeldt on ASME Sec. IX. Todd will finalize mailer and Paul will post on website with Dwight’s approval.
Next meeting at Valleyfair-August 31 @ 4:30.

June 8, 2009

Meeting called to order at 4:40
Minutes: Mace Motion to accept with amendments as follows: Olympic Steel Tour rescheduled for Mid October and Procedure Forum rescheduled for Mid September motion carries
Treasures Report: Mike will send bill to Dwight for Xcel attending technical seminar. Mace will get Mike new address for bounced check from BTM. Bob motions to accept report. Motion carries
Website: Paul “yanked down” items the board wanted removed. Todd to draft letter for advertiser billing. Paul to post minutes on website. It was also discussed as far as posting the final Treasures Report. Mace to get Paul copies of the minutes.
Valleyfair: Canceled due to lack of interest. We will discuss different venue later.
Weld Procedure Forum: Todd to get dates from Dwight for September 2009
District Conference: Jay reported that it was a good experience. A lot of good information was put out. Next conference in Saskatoon June 2010. Todd, Jay and Mike to work out a split of the reimbursement from National. Todd motions to reimburse all 3 $100.00 for lodging. Motion Carries. Mace brought up that National has set up a fund to reimburse District Directors for travel expenses. This means the section no longer has to pay Mace $1.00 per member. Maces total fund at National is $1600.00. He requested that the section may want to make a donation to the District 15 Scholarship Fund. Jay motions to donate $1000.00 to the fund. Motion carries
Golf Outing: 44 golfers so far. Mike to call the golf club with the numbers. The golf club will provide balls for the golfers. Mike to do the shopping for raffle prizes
CWI/ CWS: All set
Publicity: Dan suggested using the media to promote our section events. Mace will check into this.
AWS/ Fabtech: Paul and Dan to check on prices for a bus. Mace will check with Rhenda as far as National reimbursing the section for this. It was noted that they will not reimburse for a bus load of students.
